Self Portraits

Self Portraits

Racing For Change

These self portraits I made as a celebration of my new, lifestyle of heathier eating habits and exercise. In the year 2018 I made the decision to go on Weight Watchers in an effort to lose 60 pounds and within 10 months I lost a total of 100 pounds. “Rocked It” was my first self portrait that I did since losing 100 pounds. I wanted to examine the anatomical structure of my face since changing my lifestyle. I drew myself in a hat to represent a more confident, healthier version of myself. “The Winner” is a self portrait expressing my resurrected interest in long distance running. I used running as my main form of activity to help me lose the weight and fell in love with it! In April of 2020 I completed my very first half marathon. The numbers on the racing bibs in the background are my beginning weight on the left and the end weight on the right. In “2020” as I was becoming more and more involved in diet and exercise everything started to become all about numbers. How many miles are you running?, what is your weight this week?, How many reps are you doing?, How many calories or sugars are in this food?. The more involved I seemed to be getting into exercise and running especially the more obsessive I got into numbers that is why I have the pattern of numbers behind me. Last but not least Contemplating is a self portrait that I did before I lost all my weight. During that time I was contemplating on the thought of losing the weight because at that time I was not feeling very comfortable in my own skin.

Drawing Facts:

Size: 22x30”

Medium: Charcoal on Paper

Each drawing was created in a reductive technique with charcoal. This means that I had covered a white sheet of paper with charcoal and then I erased out the highlights with an eraser. This is a very traditional drawing technique that was even used by some of the Master artists in the past.
